Cold Winter Nights At Work

Growing up, my dad worked long hours and very odd hours. He worked for the gas company in the mountains of eastern KY. Dad never knew when he would get that phone call to go out in the middle of the night to some remote area on top of a mountain or the side of one to fix a gas leak or a frozen valve. One thing he knew for sure though is that during the winter the odds were slightly higher. I can still remember dad getting ready to go out. Double layers of clothing, heavy boots, gloves. As all this was happening, my mother would fill his Stanley full of boiling water and get a pot of coffee ready. Just as dad would finally lace up that last boot, mom would fill his thermos with steaming hot coffee. Dad would sometimes be out 14-16 hours at a time in some of the harshest remote mountain cold weather. The one thing I always remember is bringing his stuff in from the truck for him when he got home. I'd empty his dinner bucket and then grab his Stanley from the truck. I used to wonder why that liquid coming out of there had all that steam coming from it. It wasn’t until years later that I realized that the Stanley was actually keeping the coffee hot all that time. 16 hours in the cold and ice and it was as hot as when it left the pot. So naturally when I got my new job as a surface coal miner my mind went back to those nights. I went straight to Wal-Mart and bought a brand new Stanley. You can bet on those cold nights on the mountain top, it won’t leave my side. Thank you not only for an exceptional product, but for creating an American icon. The Stanley name is immediately recognized as the ONLY quality product that lives up to its reputation.
